What are progressive neurological conditions?
Progressive neurological conditions are disorders of the nervous system that worsen over time. They affect how the brain, spinal cord, and nerves communicate with the body. Common examples include Parkinson’s Disease, Multiple Sclerosis (MS), Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and Huntington’s Disease. These conditions vary in how they present, but they often lead to challenges with movement, communication, cognition, and independence.
Comprehensive Therapy for Progressive Neurological Conditions
While these conditions cannot currently be cured, allied health interventions can play a vital role in managing symptoms, preserving function, and slowing disease progression. Our team works collaboratively to deliver holistic, individualised care:
- Physiotherapy focuses on maintaining mobility, balance, and strength. Tailored exercises can help reduce falls and maximise independence.
- Occupational Therapy supports clients in adapting their daily routines and environments to maintain autonomy and safety at home and in the community.
- Exercise Physiology uses safe, structured physical activity to improve endurance, muscle function, and mental wellbeing—often delaying the impact of disease progression.
- Speech Pathology addresses communication and swallowing difficulties, providing strategies and therapies to support speaking, eating, and drinking safely. Our Speech Pathology team also deliver LSVT therapy for Parkinson’s Disease.
- Social Work offers emotional support, counselling, and assistance navigating community services, helping clients and families manage the psychological and practical challenges of living with a progressive condition.
Common symptoms we treat
Clients may experience muscle weakness, tremors, stiffness, fatigue, coordination issues, speech or swallowing problems, cognitive changes, and emotional difficulties. Our interdisciplinary approach ensures all aspects of health and wellbeing are considered in the care plan.
